New Year – New Covers

Sorry for missing last week. I just up and lost track of the days. I’m trying to prep for back to back signings halfway across the country from each other as well as keep up with the word-work. It’s not lost on me that I’ve become a bit reclusive.

BUT..as promised I do have some new covers to share. One should be familiar, just a wee touch up. The other two are new. Rogue got a facelift. I think it’s a good one and it helps draw the series together. Black Guard is new, as is Assassins. I am uber pleased with them!

Rogue and Black Guard, which have been doing time in a couple different sets, will release solo, together, on August 1st. Assassins will release later this year to complete the Trilogy. (The back for Assassins isn’t done yet, so I’m only sharing the front for now.)

Ready to see them??

Til next time, read something great.
Yes, I have more covers to share…can you believe it?

New Year…whoops.

I keep thinking I have more time than I do. It’s nearly the end of June and I’m completely flummoxed by that at the moment. This post will be short-ish…but oh so sweet!

I have two things to share…ONE is that for this week, Gravedigger…my thriller/suspense/mystery title that came out late last year is $0.99 on all outlets. That’s right! You read that here…the e-book version….however you like to read ebooks…is on sale! Grab your copy before the price goes back to normal!

I LOVE…ABSOLUTELY LOVE almost every one of my covers, but this one is so special. My graphic artist actually LAID IN A GRAVE to get this shot and let her hubs stand over her with the shovel. That’s trust. And, that’s immense craft in my opinion. (Turn the cover sideways for the full effect.) I cannot ever say enough about this one, or the designer Suzanna from Funky Book Design.
MAD LOVE GIRL!!

Thing number TWO this week is another cover reveal. September 7 – 9 I’ll be attending Show Me Your Books Kansas City. This new event is a charity fundraiser for The Dream Factory. If you know me even a little, you know why I signed on. BUT…adding to the good juju is that opening night there is a small group of authors who have all agreed to release a new title, and the proceeds from that night go straight to the charity…no middle nuthin.
GUESS WHO is in that group. Seriously. Guess.

Yeappers…it’s me. I’m excited to sneak peek the cover here. The tale is the first of a new series surrounding Heartland Emergency Air Regional Transport. It will be stories surrounding the team of professionals who staff the life flights where seconds matter and having heart is sometimes harder than getting a medical license. I can’t wait to introduce you to the crazy cast of characters who have been keeping me awake.

The HEART Flights lift off September 7th.

Check back with me next week. Maybe, just maybe I’ll have an update on what’s what…but I’ll definitely have at least one more cover reveal. (I’ve got 4 more for you…so, it could be more than one.)

Read something awesome.

New Year…new titles

This year will have a landmark number of new titles for me if I pull off everything I have planned. At the moment, I am one off the goal because of some mandatory training time for the other me, and I am adjusting. The goal is still possible, but it’s going to take every spare moment, and there really aren’t that many unaccounted for.

That said, let’s focus on happy things…like covers. I’ve been promising cover reveals and I have a BUNCH of them coming. I’m going to break them out over the next couple of weeks. Here today, I’m sharing the next cover in The Custos series, Book of Revelations, which should be accompanying me to the next signing I have, Writers on the River in Peoria Illinois and the following week at Literary Love Savannah in Savannah, Georgia.

Other than the graphic artist and my street team, no one else has seen this…so here’s the big reveal. MWAH!

If you haven’t started the series, you have time. Book of Time is a prequel novella and is free on all outlets. That only leaves Book of Change and Book of Mysteries to get through before July 20th. Are you up for the challenge?

I knew you would be.

Distractions and Snippets

I’ve been working on Veiled Hearts or Veiled Hearts Revealed. I’m still bouncing around those two possible titles for the third book in my Veil Series. There is also the question of, since this is going to be a short story or novella, is it really book 3 or is it more book 2.5? These are just two of the random thoughts bouncing around my head and are not really helpful when trying to write.

The last week and a half has been full of distractions. The kind of distractions that don’t allow for sticking your head in the sand. Nope, the ostrich method was not an option…and I don’t mind telling you how much that sucked.

Every day I get a little more written. Not as much as I would like, but every word on the page is one more than was there before. Anyway, I thought I’d give you a brief, unedited, subject to change, snippet of Celine and Coipeail’s story. I’m not going to do a lot of these snippets for this story because it is going to be shorter than a full length book. This sneak peek is from chapter 1.

The Veil Book 2.5/3

Through the panes of beveled glass, the first streams of the morning’s light pierced the darkness of her room, cutting a swath between the twin curtains fluttering on the current of the wind flowing through the open window. A new day was about to begin. Lying beneath a multi-colored comforter, Celine found she no longer looked forward to uncovering new discoveries, but the day and her employees didn’t care about her current melancholy. The minutes and hours would continue to tick ever forward. Her staff had expectations that she would continue to garner business to ensure their healthy paychecks padded their pockets and checking accounts. She was needed, and yet…she wasn’t.

Raising her hands, she scrubbed her face, and groaned. “Alright, Celine. Enough of this pity party. Get your ass out of bed and get going.”

Her body and mind still at war about leaving the warmth of her bed, she laid there a bit longer until the fullness of her bladder, making itself known, settled the argument of whether or not to get moving. She threw back the covers and shivered as her feet made contact with the cold wood floor. Hurrying to the bathroom connected to her room, Celine’s ears listened in vain for sounds of her cousin, Daria, moving around, even though she knew she wasn’t here. Daria wasn’t even in the same realm, which just made the silence in the house that much louder. Shaking her head, Celine tapped down the maudlin feelings threatening to rise within her chest, and got on with the business answering the call of nature.

Stepping out of her room, the scent of freshly brewed coffee tickled her nose. “Thank the gods for whoever inspired the person who made programmable coffee makers.” © Jolanthe Aleksander 2108

Until next  week…Happy Reading!

MPD-Pending

There are some weeks where you want to climb into a book and escape from the real world. This is okay, unless you are working on a couple of different deadlines and every minute of writing time you can squeeze into a day is essential to meeting said deadlines.

To meet these deadlines, I’ve been trying to work on two different stories at the same time. No, there is no way to get them mixed up. They are different sub-genres beneath the romance genre. On one hand, it’s sort of good to step into a different world when the one you’re working on is giving you fits. On the other hand, there’s a real possibility that I may develop multiple personality disorder before the summer is over. I’m sure one of my personalities will let you know my mental status then…or my publisher may let your know where my padded room is located. If you come to visit, I’ll be the one in the bedazzled, purple, hug-me jacket. A girl has to have her bling.

So, until next week…do what I wish I could take a week or so to do, and read a good book or two. Happy Reading!

new direction

While working on the third Veil book, I had an eureka moment. It was a moment similar to one I had when working on Breathe Me to Life. This is a short  story. Not everything has to be shown or told…just the important bits that pertain to getting the story from point A to point B.

This little revelation, while awesome, also led to a couple of chapters being wiped out. That was a major ouch, but in looking at them, I wasn’t completely happy with them, and they were dragging the story out unnecessarily. But yeah…OUCH!

Sacrifice the word count for the sake of the story. The story is what is important. It’s a hard lesson to learn and to remember, but an important one.

Until next week…Happy Reading!

New Year – New Plan

Being an author in today’s environment is akin to being fitted for a straight jacket that you may or may not ever wear…and if you do, it will likely be without notice. The world as you know it will upend and scramble in the time it takes you to refresh the page. But, that’s also part of the thrill.

As such, being flexible to the fickle tide is imperative for anyone who deigns to dip their toe into the publishing world game. Thinking about the recent things (the last week or so)…namely trademarking words, and the accelerated closing of Amazon’s Kindle Worlds projects, it’s like waiting for the next fiasco to hit the current White House administration. Take a breath, turn the page…Whoops – there it is.

I myself am affected by the Amazon KW closing, but am fortunate enough to be writing in a world that will continue on, though differently, after the demise is final. The stories I’ve been working on to continue my little corner of the Paranormal Dating Agency world will find light and in a couple of ways…and be able to reach new audiences because of what has happened. Did I see that silver lining when the closure was announced? No. I don’t think any of us did. We all more likely felt the pinch of sliding into the jacket, and an uncomfortable buckle being cinched tight….limitation once again in the writing world.

My thanks go out to Milly Taiden, the matriarch of PDA for the quick action that will enable I, and others, to keep our stories out and add to the growing world that Gerri uniquely matches up pair by pair.

Cross one near-catastrophe off the list, and hang the jacket back in the stand-by closet for the next event. Meanwhile…there are words to write and worlds to build.

See you on the pages.

It’s LIVE!

It’s LIVE! Breathe Me to Life found in the Once Upon A Twisted Time box set is live!

Here are what some of the reader who have read Breathe Me to Life have said about it:

“Breathe me to life by Jolanthe Aleksander
A fae Prince. Love. Fate.
Will Kellan and Allisa manage to fall in Love even when she’s a mortal?
Well written read with a lot of complicated plot things.”

“Breathe me to life by Jolanthe Aleksander
A complicated love story. What are you willing to do for true love? A story that will keep you thinking long after its done.”

“Breathe Me to Life is a wonderful short story by Jolanthe Alexander. This was a nice introduction to her writing. The story flowed nicely and left me wanting more. I look forward to reading more from this author. This is a great collection of stories!”

I admit, I smiled like a Cheshire Cat, emitted a squeal or two, and did a happy chair dance, when I read those reviews.

I have to confess that writer’s doubt was STRONG where this story was concerned. I was sure my story was going to be a flop compared to what the other writers contributed. There are some incredibly talented authors in this set. Don’t get me wrong…I know not everyone is going to enjoy Breathe Me to Life, but right now…I know of 3 people who did and that makes my heart smile.

If you would like to read it, along with the other 14 stories in the set…it’s only 99 pennies. It will be available on all platforms for a few more days before the set goes exclusively to KU. The buy links will be posted below.

BREATHE ME TO LIFE Ailsa was biding her time when the call of the music floating on the wings of the night’s wind led her to a moonlit glen and another world. Kellan, Prince of the Fae Court, was tired and bored with things as they were until a young woman not only sparked his interest but his desire to finally claim a mate. Two souls find in each other a connection unlike any other. A chance encounter brought them together. A dream created a bond. Will the jealousy of one who was scorned tear them apart? Or will love’s kiss breathe life into a sleeping beauty?

New year – New…what?

Some days, I amaze myself.
Others, I wonder how I managed to wear matching shoes.

Lately, I’m finding that my head is often on autopilot. I think it’s a defense mechanism because I’ve got such a miasma going on. Different works, different research projects for others, different genres, and the daily stuff I seldom think about until after…

This week is a great example:
Today, there are multiple daycause promotions going live for a set that releases next week. Once Upon A Twisted Time, and I have 2 writing/marketing webinars tonight.
Tomorrow, the Dark Rising set goes live, there is the release day party for it, and there is a promotion going up for Book of Time on FreeBooksy.
Wednesday the Fussy Librarian is taking a crack at Once Upon A Twisted Time, and it’s my federal compliance call in for the day gig.
Thursday…believe it or not, I think I have a cave day to write.
Friday, Once Upon a Twisted Time is going out in the PNR Lovers Newsletter and I have a day of conference calls.
Saturday is a different kind of crazy that I’ll leave at that, and
Sunday I’m meeting with a promoter to talk shop for a late lunch.

NO WONDER I’m not hitting my word counts or MS deadlines cleanly…I’m only getting one word day a week.

I think I’m forgetting things too. Which is really the bigger fear, because the stuff I know about, I know will get handled…it’s the stuff I forget about that will likely land me in hot water. If I’m lucky the hot water will have bubbles and not salt. 😉

Til next time…save a hug-me jacket for me.

Mwah!

What is Real?

I saw a meme the other day on social media. The background was a picture of bookshelves stuffed to the brim…a bibliophile’s dream. The words were, “When was the last time you read a “real” book? That stopped my newsfeed strolling in its track. What did that mean…a real book?

One could say, they meant a book not on a reading devices, but does that discredit a book from being real? It is the same story if you reading on your favorite reader, or if you hold a physical copy with paper pages to turn. The effort in producing that book is the same. The manner in which it is read is entirely up to the reader.

I’ve also heard people imply that romance isn’t a real book. I so totally do NOT understand that thinking. I don’t think the book snobs know how much research we romance authors go through. For example, historical romance writers have to research the time period they are writing in and if they have any real historical people mentioned in their book, they may have to do a little research on them. Fantasy and paranormal romance writers have to research the mythical characters they write about. These are just a couple of examples…I am sure there are things writers in other sub-genre categories that are umbrellaed under romance, like weaponry, fighting techniques, medical and law enforcement procedures…the list is long. And trust me when I say, writing those more intimate portions of a romance book is no walk in the park.

I guess, what I am getting at is, just because you do not enjoy a genre doesn’t mean you get to discount the talent, imagination, or the medium that author chooses to publish their book in, and deserve the respect.

What do you think the question, ‘When is the last time you read a REAL book?’ means?

Until next week…Happy Reading!
