Signing Season

My signing season is fast approaching. I cannot believe it is already past the half way mark of June. The year is half over people. How did that happen? Where did the time go when we weren’t looking?

This year I am only doing to events, Writers on the River and Penned Con. One of the things I love about these events is that their proceeds go to charities. This will be my third year going to these events. I cannot say enough about the heart and soul the organizers pour into them to make sure that the readers and writers have a wonderful experience.

The books I will have at Writers on the River are Beyond the Veil of Whispered Dreams and The Veiled Path to Destiny. Unfortunately, Breathe Me to Life will still be under contract with the Once Upon A Twisted Time box set. However, if you are able to make it Penned Con, the rights for that story will have been returned to me and I will have print copies there for sale. With luck and the grace of my muse, I will also have the third book in the Veil series at Penned Con for sale as well.

Ack! I need to get in touch with my cover artist!

Until next week…Happy Reading!

Distractions and Snippets

I’ve been working on Veiled Hearts or Veiled Hearts Revealed. I’m still bouncing around those two possible titles for the third book in my Veil Series. There is also the question of, since this is going to be a short story or novella, is it really book 3 or is it more book 2.5? These are just two of the random thoughts bouncing around my head and are not really helpful when trying to write.

The last week and a half has been full of distractions. The kind of distractions that don’t allow for sticking your head in the sand. Nope, the ostrich method was not an option…and I don’t mind telling you how much that sucked.

Every day I get a little more written. Not as much as I would like, but every word on the page is one more than was there before. Anyway, I thought I’d give you a brief, unedited, subject to change, snippet of Celine and Coipeail’s story. I’m not going to do a lot of these snippets for this story because it is going to be shorter than a full length book. This sneak peek is from chapter 1.

The Veil Book 2.5/3

Through the panes of beveled glass, the first streams of the morning’s light pierced the darkness of her room, cutting a swath between the twin curtains fluttering on the current of the wind flowing through the open window. A new day was about to begin. Lying beneath a multi-colored comforter, Celine found she no longer looked forward to uncovering new discoveries, but the day and her employees didn’t care about her current melancholy. The minutes and hours would continue to tick ever forward. Her staff had expectations that she would continue to garner business to ensure their healthy paychecks padded their pockets and checking accounts. She was needed, and yet…she wasn’t.

Raising her hands, she scrubbed her face, and groaned. “Alright, Celine. Enough of this pity party. Get your ass out of bed and get going.”

Her body and mind still at war about leaving the warmth of her bed, she laid there a bit longer until the fullness of her bladder, making itself known, settled the argument of whether or not to get moving. She threw back the covers and shivered as her feet made contact with the cold wood floor. Hurrying to the bathroom connected to her room, Celine’s ears listened in vain for sounds of her cousin, Daria, moving around, even though she knew she wasn’t here. Daria wasn’t even in the same realm, which just made the silence in the house that much louder. Shaking her head, Celine tapped down the maudlin feelings threatening to rise within her chest, and got on with the business answering the call of nature.

Stepping out of her room, the scent of freshly brewed coffee tickled her nose. “Thank the gods for whoever inspired the person who made programmable coffee makers.” © Jolanthe Aleksander 2108

MPD-Pending

There are some weeks where you want to climb into a book and escape from the real world. This is okay, unless you are working on a couple of different deadlines and every minute of writing time you can squeeze into a day is essential to meeting said deadlines.

To meet these deadlines, I’ve been trying to work on two different stories at the same time. No, there is no way to get them mixed up. They are different sub-genres beneath the romance genre. On one hand, it’s sort of good to step into a different world when the one you’re working on is giving you fits. On the other hand, there’s a real possibility that I may develop multiple personality disorder before the summer is over. I’m sure one of my personalities will let you know my mental status then…or my publisher may let your know where my padded room is located. If you come to visit, I’ll be the one in the bedazzled, purple, hug-me jacket. A girl has to have her bling.

So, until next week…do what I wish I could take a week or so to do, and read a good book or two. Happy Reading!

new direction

While working on the third Veil book, I had an eureka moment. It was a moment similar to one I had when working on Breathe Me to Life. This is a short  story. Not everything has to be shown or told…just the important bits that pertain to getting the story from point A to point B.

This little revelation, while awesome, also led to a couple of chapters being wiped out. That was a major ouch, but in looking at them, I wasn’t completely happy with them, and they were dragging the story out unnecessarily. But yeah…OUCH!

Sacrifice the word count for the sake of the story. The story is what is important. It’s a hard lesson to learn and to remember, but an important one.

Until next week…Happy Reading!

No Resting on the Laurels

Breathe Me to Life in the Once Upon A Twisted Time box set has been out for a little over a week now. It’s now available on Kindle Unlimited, so if you have a KU membership and have been waiting for it to switch over…your wait is over. 😉

So, what have I been doing since release day? There is no rest for the weary, wicked, or authors.  I’ve been working on Celine and Coipeail’s story. I’m pretty sure it’s going to be a shortish story, but who knows…characters sometimes throw you for a loop and insist certain events that weren’t initially planned happen. I’ve also agreed to do a short story anthology…and there may be another project in the works…I’ve also agreed to do an anthology that isn’t going to be released until next year. In other words, I’ve been presented with a writing challenge that will not only push me, but will introduce my writing to different audiences. Of course I answered that challenge with a “yes”. Pray for me and my sanity. I promise to let you all know what is going on with these other projects as they come up.

In the meantime…I need to get back to Coipeail and Celine.

Until next week…Happy Reading!

It’s LIVE!

It’s LIVE! Breathe Me to Life found in the Once Upon A Twisted Time box set is live!

Here are what some of the reader who have read Breathe Me to Life have said about it:

“Breathe me to life by Jolanthe Aleksander
A fae Prince. Love. Fate.
Will Kellan and Allisa manage to fall in Love even when she’s a mortal?
Well written read with a lot of complicated plot things.”

“Breathe me to life by Jolanthe Aleksander
A complicated love story. What are you willing to do for true love? A story that will keep you thinking long after its done.”

“Breathe Me to Life is a wonderful short story by Jolanthe Alexander. This was a nice introduction to her writing. The story flowed nicely and left me wanting more. I look forward to reading more from this author. This is a great collection of stories!”

I admit, I smiled like a Cheshire Cat, emitted a squeal or two, and did a happy chair dance, when I read those reviews.

I have to confess that writer’s doubt was STRONG where this story was concerned. I was sure my story was going to be a flop compared to what the other writers contributed. There are some incredibly talented authors in this set. Don’t get me wrong…I know not everyone is going to enjoy Breathe Me to Life, but right now…I know of 3 people who did and that makes my heart smile.

If you would like to read it, along with the other 14 stories in the set…it’s only 99 pennies. It will be available on all platforms for a few more days before the set goes exclusively to KU. The buy links will be posted below.

BREATHE ME TO LIFE Ailsa was biding her time when the call of the music floating on the wings of the night’s wind led her to a moonlit glen and another world. Kellan, Prince of the Fae Court, was tired and bored with things as they were until a young woman not only sparked his interest but his desire to finally claim a mate. Two souls find in each other a connection unlike any other. A chance encounter brought them together. A dream created a bond. Will the jealousy of one who was scorned tear them apart? Or will love’s kiss breathe life into a sleeping beauty?

Spring, Writing, and Harry Potter

Spring has finally sprung in my neck of the woods. Did I tell you that Spring is my favorite time of the year. Everything is fresh and new, brimming with the promise of new life, and eager to bring color to a landscape that was brown or bare.

That promise of blooming beauty, brings pollen with it, which brings itchy, watery eyes and lots of sneezing. Yay! Yes…Mother Nature has a wicked sense of humor. She is going to show you all the pretties…but there is a payment for your enjoyment. It reminds me of that scene in one of the Harry Potter movies when Ron is trying to interpret the leaves at the bottom of Harry’s cup…”You’re going to suffer, but you’re going to be happy for it.” lol. This is what Spring is for me. Which when you think about it, in a convoluted kind of way, that could be said about writing, editing, and publishing a book. You’re going to suffer through the process…but you’re going to be happy once it’s all done.

Once Upon A Twisted Time is springing forth on Tuesday, May 8th. I hope you will consider buying it for your reading pleasure. If you hop over to my newsletter, you can see the covers and read the blurbs of the stories included in the set. You just may find at least one story you’re willing you just have to read. I hope one of them is mine. 😉

Until next week…Happy Reading!

What is Real?

I saw a meme the other day on social media. The background was a picture of bookshelves stuffed to the brim…a bibliophile’s dream. The words were, “When was the last time you read a “real” book? That stopped my newsfeed strolling in its track. What did that mean…a real book?

One could say, they meant a book not on a reading devices, but does that discredit a book from being real? It is the same story if you reading on your favorite reader, or if you hold a physical copy with paper pages to turn. The effort in producing that book is the same. The manner in which it is read is entirely up to the reader.

I’ve also heard people imply that romance isn’t a real book. I so totally do NOT understand that thinking. I don’t think the book snobs know how much research we romance authors go through. For example, historical romance writers have to research the time period they are writing in and if they have any real historical people mentioned in their book, they may have to do a little research on them. Fantasy and paranormal romance writers have to research the mythical characters they write about. These are just a couple of examples…I am sure there are things writers in other sub-genre categories that are umbrellaed under romance, like weaponry, fighting techniques, medical and law enforcement procedures…the list is long. And trust me when I say, writing those more intimate portions of a romance book is no walk in the park.

I guess, what I am getting at is, just because you do not enjoy a genre doesn’t mean you get to discount the talent, imagination, or the medium that author chooses to publish their book in, and deserve the respect.

What do you think the question, ‘When is the last time you read a REAL book?’ means?

Until next week…Happy Reading!

The Mighty Power of Words

In less than 3 weeks, on May 8th, Breathe Me to Life in the Once Upon a Twisted Time box set, will be live and in the hands of the public at large. Right now  some bloggers have it, and there is a nervous anxiety in knowing that your brand new baby is in the hands of readers who’s job it is to read your story objectively and judge it.

Don’t get me wrong….I know my story is not going to be everyone’s cup of tea. That knowing, however, doesn’t negate the desire of wanting everyone to like my book baby…or at least to be kind and constructive with their criticism of it.  I get that once you expose your art, in whatever form you chose to display your creativity, to the public, you are opening yourself up to their public opinion.

There is this observation that has been made by more than a few authors. Some people are reluctant to leave reviews for things they enjoy, but things they don’t like…they are more than willing to pull up their mighty desk chair steed and fire off their keyboards to leave a scathing review, which at times can turn into a personal attack on the author. I have not had this experience. I hope I never do, but there is always the possibility that it will happen. I don’t think there is an effective way of preparing yourself for the eventuality of that punch in the gut. I don’t think this happens only in reviews. I think it happens in our everyday lives as well. Words have the power to build up and tear down…it’s on all of us to be conscious of how we use them.

With the good, there is  the bad…and you have to accept that you can’t have one without the other, for without the darkness how do you appreciate the light?

All that being said…here is a sneak peek at Breathe Me to Life…

The combined scent of amber and sandalwood floating on the current of air that came through when the door opened niggled at her memory of Kellan. It had been seven years since she last laid eyes on him in the flesh. Seven long years. He had left his imprint on her life, and every man she tried to date didn’t come close in comparison with him. I’m doomed to spend my life waiting for a man who has probably forgotten I even exist. She closed her eyes and inhaled, hoping to carry the smell of him with her when she fell into sleep’s dark embrace later.

Two years, after the veil between the Fae and human realms fell, she started seeing Kellan in her dreams. Only there did she know the feel of his hands against her skin, the never satisfying hunger for his kiss, the taste of his sweat, and the musky scent of their bodies as they rose to the pinnacle of ecstasy and shattered together. In her dreams, she knew the feel of his arms holding her tightly against his sweat-drenched body. She’d reluctantly fall into an exhausted sleep, only to awaken to an empty room and bed, with only the phantom touch of him upon her skin.

Those nightly visits came to an abrupt stop three weeks ago. Her heart ached at the pang of loss even as her brain railed at his disappearance without out a word of goodbye. In the light of day, she knew they were just dreams. What she shared with Kellan in the recesses of her sleeping mind was not real, but it felt like it was, or had been.

The sound of a throat clearing brought Ailsa out of her out of her reverie. Looking up, her breath caught in her throat. Standing there was Kellan dressed in black leather pants that hugged his hips and muscular legs like a second skin. A white tunic tucked into his waistband with a V at the neckline offered a teasing glimpse of the chest it covered. The man who had been her dream lover and ruined any attraction to other men was now standing in front of her. Mouth open, she stood, her feet rooted to the floor, staring at him in shocked surprise, as a smirk tipped up one corner of his full lips.

“Are you not happy to see me, mo milis?” His voice was more seductive than it had been in her dreams.~©Jolanthe Aleksander, Breathe Me to Life 2018~
