new direction

While working on the third Veil book, I had an eureka moment. It was a moment similar to one I had when working on Breathe Me to Life. This is a short  story. Not everything has to be shown or told…just the important bits that pertain to getting the story from point A to point B.

This little revelation, while awesome, also led to a couple of chapters being wiped out. That was a major ouch, but in looking at them, I wasn’t completely happy with them, and they were dragging the story out unnecessarily. But yeah…OUCH!

Sacrifice the word count for the sake of the story. The story is what is important. It’s a hard lesson to learn and to remember, but an important one.

Until next week…Happy Reading!

New Year – New Plan

Being an author in today’s environment is akin to being fitted for a straight jacket that you may or may not ever wear…and if you do, it will likely be without notice. The world as you know it will upend and scramble in the time it takes you to refresh the page. But, that’s also part of the thrill.

As such, being flexible to the fickle tide is imperative for anyone who deigns to dip their toe into the publishing world game. Thinking about the recent things (the last week or so)…namely trademarking words, and the accelerated closing of Amazon’s Kindle Worlds projects, it’s like waiting for the next fiasco to hit the current White House administration. Take a breath, turn the page…Whoops – there it is.

I myself am affected by the Amazon KW closing, but am fortunate enough to be writing in a world that will continue on, though differently, after the demise is final. The stories I’ve been working on to continue my little corner of the Paranormal Dating Agency world will find light and in a couple of ways…and be able to reach new audiences because of what has happened. Did I see that silver lining when the closure was announced? No. I don’t think any of us did. We all more likely felt the pinch of sliding into the jacket, and an uncomfortable buckle being cinched tight….limitation once again in the writing world.

My thanks go out to Milly Taiden, the matriarch of PDA for the quick action that will enable I, and others, to keep our stories out and add to the growing world that Gerri uniquely matches up pair by pair.

Cross one near-catastrophe off the list, and hang the jacket back in the stand-by closet for the next event. Meanwhile…there are words to write and worlds to build.

See you on the pages.

A Familiar Place and Old Friends

Book four of my Kindred series, Blindsided, was started sometime last year. About thirty thousand words in, I had to shelve it for more pressing projects. I put it away with reluctance. The story was virtually writing itself, and I hated leaving my world of The Kindred.

I am now ready to finish Blindsided. Of course, I had to reread what I had first, making a few corrections and tweaks. There’s so much happening in this installment I needed an outline to keep myself straight. Once I got a workable timeline, I could see the story a little clearer in my mind. All I have to do now is sit down and write. What I wouldn’t give for the luxury of staying at home to write all day. That, sadly, is wishing for the unattainable. At least, for the next few years. So, I make do the best I can, saving my writing for my five days off. That gives me ten days a month to devote to writing. Immersing myself into my world of warriors and Promised Souls is my ‘happy place.’ It’s a lot like going home.

I think you’ll enjoy the story I bring back with me.

Until next week,

No Resting on the Laurels

Breathe Me to Life in the Once Upon A Twisted Time box set has been out for a little over a week now. It’s now available on Kindle Unlimited, so if you have a KU membership and have been waiting for it to switch over…your wait is over. 😉

So, what have I been doing since release day? There is no rest for the weary, wicked, or authors.  I’ve been working on Celine and Coipeail’s story. I’m pretty sure it’s going to be a shortish story, but who knows…characters sometimes throw you for a loop and insist certain events that weren’t initially planned happen. I’ve also agreed to do a short story anthology…and there may be another project in the works…I’ve also agreed to do an anthology that isn’t going to be released until next year. In other words, I’ve been presented with a writing challenge that will not only push me, but will introduce my writing to different audiences. Of course I answered that challenge with a “yes”. Pray for me and my sanity. I promise to let you all know what is going on with these other projects as they come up.

In the meantime…I need to get back to Coipeail and Celine.

Until next week…Happy Reading!

New Year – New Oooops

Running in circles is dangerous I’ve discovered. In my quest to keep up with so many pieces, I wasn’t paying attention. Consequently, I’m going to be far more ‘gold’ than I’m used to for at least the next 4 – 5 weeks.

What?

As a woman of a certain age…with teenage (almost not) daughters…I am a bottled blonde. As long as I have a 5-spot in my pocket and blonde comes in a bottle, I will be fair-haired. 🙂 I came into this world so fine and light that you almost didn’t know I had hair…I like it that way. Not to mention, the greys are too vivid a reminder of my stress level.

Anyhoop…I ran through the beauty supply and grabbed my vice to do the deed as I was close picking up something else. Oooops. Instead of grabbing the high-lift that keeps me looking like the silver strands are lovely hi-lights…I grabbed the normal version which is more golden (insert yellow) than I’m used to. I’m afraid the streaks of stress are going to come through on the ‘tinsel’ shade this round and give me away. Luckily, I’m not going anywhere before the next opportunity to correct the oversight.

Still…it’s a bit disheartening. My knees, hips, and back have the deal down pat of reminding me my age. My hair and I had a bargain, and I blew it. Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks? I’ve learned my lesson. I’m out of the ‘selfie’ game for a month or so. 🙂

On the writing side of my world, I gave myself heart failure earlier this week. I foolishly sat down and listed the writing projects for the balance of 2018 & the upcoming 2019 agenda. Things I want to do, things I’ve committed to doing, and the stretch goals based on reader feedback and what folks are waiting on me for. WOWSA! I need to pay closer attention to this world as well. Grabbing the wrong color hair dye is repairable in a month or so…the writing agenda? Good grief, I might get to sleep when I’m dead. Then again, maybe not at this rate.

I have figuratively put superglue on the desk chair for my hiney for the foreseeable future. This is not counting the promotion things that are in process and the signing event that is kicking into overdrive in about 6 weeks. I might need to look into cloning soon. I’m not sure how this will all come to fruition…but, as always, I’m determined.

I’m doing my level best to stick with the social media stuff…but that’s likely where the disconnect will happen I’m afraid. So…if you’re missing me somewhere…give me a shout and hold me accountable to come out of the cave for a spell. I’m giving you that authority. It’s that…or the next time you see me, I might still be yellow haired…but with a pair of black-splotch smudged eyes and who knows how fallow my skin could go.

I’m counting on you.

You might be my only hope.

The In-Between

I’m in that deceptive in-between place. I’ve finished one project, ready for the editor. Another project is completed, waiting its turn, while the next one up is still on the shelf, waiting patiently to be taken out to be worked on. Deceptive, because there really is no in-between in a writer’s world. Projects or WIP’s, whatever you choose to call them, always overlap. There’s always something that needs attention, some sort of promotion going on, something that needs revising or tweaking. A writer’s brain never shuts down. If I’m not thinking of one story, another one is tapping incessantly trying to garner my attention.

I know that as soon as I finish this blog, I’ll be opening the manuscript for Blindsided. It’s been awhile since I was in that world, so I’ll have to reread what I have, immersing myself in my favorite place with old friends. I remember how excited I was when I started it, and I know it’ll come back to me. I’m savoring the moment of anticipation, at the same time dreading it. Part of me wants to drag it out because writing will bring me that much closer to the end of the series. I try not to think that far ahead. I hate saying good-bye.

So, for this little space of time, I’m going to enjoy my in-between. Another cup of coffee sounds good, too.

Until next week,

~Madison

It’s LIVE!

It’s LIVE! Breathe Me to Life found in the Once Upon A Twisted Time box set is live!

Here are what some of the reader who have read Breathe Me to Life have said about it:

“Breathe me to life by Jolanthe Aleksander
A fae Prince. Love. Fate.
Will Kellan and Allisa manage to fall in Love even when she’s a mortal?
Well written read with a lot of complicated plot things.”

“Breathe me to life by Jolanthe Aleksander
A complicated love story. What are you willing to do for true love? A story that will keep you thinking long after its done.”

“Breathe Me to Life is a wonderful short story by Jolanthe Alexander. This was a nice introduction to her writing. The story flowed nicely and left me wanting more. I look forward to reading more from this author. This is a great collection of stories!”

I admit, I smiled like a Cheshire Cat, emitted a squeal or two, and did a happy chair dance, when I read those reviews.

I have to confess that writer’s doubt was STRONG where this story was concerned. I was sure my story was going to be a flop compared to what the other writers contributed. There are some incredibly talented authors in this set. Don’t get me wrong…I know not everyone is going to enjoy Breathe Me to Life, but right now…I know of 3 people who did and that makes my heart smile.

If you would like to read it, along with the other 14 stories in the set…it’s only 99 pennies. It will be available on all platforms for a few more days before the set goes exclusively to KU. The buy links will be posted below.

BREATHE ME TO LIFE Ailsa was biding her time when the call of the music floating on the wings of the night’s wind led her to a moonlit glen and another world. Kellan, Prince of the Fae Court, was tired and bored with things as they were until a young woman not only sparked his interest but his desire to finally claim a mate. Two souls find in each other a connection unlike any other. A chance encounter brought them together. A dream created a bond. Will the jealousy of one who was scorned tear them apart? Or will love’s kiss breathe life into a sleeping beauty?

Rave Reviews, A Writer’s Bliss

For the past three weeks, I’ve been floating on a very special cloud. I’d signed up for Kelli Smith’s Reviewer Roundup. I’d done this before with a novel and a novella at different times, with very good results. But this time, Kelli was trying something new. She was featuring book series only, no more than four books, giving the readers three weeks to get their reading in and reviews posted. Of course, I signed up my Kindred series. The third installment, A Destiny Denied, released April 11 and I was dying to know what readers thought of it, and the series so far.

Three words. Totally. Blown. Away. Today is the last day with tonight’s Author Meet and Greet, so I don’t have the final count, but going by what I do have is phenomenal! Twenty readers asked for my books. Albeit, three readers didn’t turn in reviews at all, and three others didn’t review all of them, but the others . . . OMG . . . they more than made up for it. Over one hundred thirty reviews on one to seven different platforms! Are you kidding me? I’m over the moon and beyond. The icing on the cake? Except for one three-star rating (which still had a decent review), all of the reviews were four and five stars!!

RR7

Because of my day job and other things, I haven’t been able to attend any book signings to speak of in the last two years. That hurts me as a writer, because my name isn’t bandied about. While I’m on social media, I’m not publicly interacting with the readers. My books can fall into the cracks quite easily. I was scared that was happening to me. Thanks to Kelli Smith and her marketing genius, I don’t feel so “invisible” anymore. Readers like my stories. They’re eager for the next book in the series. They want to read my other works. This is music to any writer’s ears.

I’m diligently working on my next two books. One will be sent to the editor this month, the other is completed and waiting its turn. It won’t be long before I can return to Blindsided, the fourth installment of my Kindred series. I’m excited, all over again. My muse is rearing to go!

Until next week,

Spring, Writing, and Harry Potter

Spring has finally sprung in my neck of the woods. Did I tell you that Spring is my favorite time of the year. Everything is fresh and new, brimming with the promise of new life, and eager to bring color to a landscape that was brown or bare.

That promise of blooming beauty, brings pollen with it, which brings itchy, watery eyes and lots of sneezing. Yay! Yes…Mother Nature has a wicked sense of humor. She is going to show you all the pretties…but there is a payment for your enjoyment. It reminds me of that scene in one of the Harry Potter movies when Ron is trying to interpret the leaves at the bottom of Harry’s cup…”You’re going to suffer, but you’re going to be happy for it.” lol. This is what Spring is for me. Which when you think about it, in a convoluted kind of way, that could be said about writing, editing, and publishing a book. You’re going to suffer through the process…but you’re going to be happy once it’s all done.

Once Upon A Twisted Time is springing forth on Tuesday, May 8th. I hope you will consider buying it for your reading pleasure. If you hop over to my newsletter, you can see the covers and read the blurbs of the stories included in the set. You just may find at least one story you’re willing you just have to read. I hope one of them is mine. 😉

Until next week…Happy Reading!
