School is out for Summer! Do you remember counting down the days until Summer break? My son’s school let out before May had even come to a close. Which to my mind, seems entirely way too early. But then they go back early in August. I remember when I was in grade school, in Virginia, school didn’t start until after Labor Day, and it went on until at least the 2nd week in June. We got the hottest months of the year off.
Anyway, I digress. Yes, school is out so let the summer reading begin! Me, I read all the time. The child has associated reading with school. To his mind, that is the only acceptable place to do concentrated reading. Once again, I have burst his bubble on this concept with implementing the Summer break 15min a day reading assignment. He has let me know that I have spoiled his plans of having no “school work” during his vacation. *smh* Don’t get me wrong, he loves his books. He does NOT, however, like reading them to me. Yesterday was the first day for this reading torture. iPod in hand, he sat on the couch…read the first paragraph, then stood. He tried to inch his way to his room to read without mom looking on and listening. I can’t blame him for wanting to read in peace, I hate reading out loud as well, but I figure if he can read out loud at school, and according to his teachers loves doing so, he can read out loud for mom. I think my mistake was in not having his teach tell him he needed to do this. Yes, I’m making a mental note to do this next year. lol
Anyway…I hope all of you are having a wonderful time with the books you and yours have picked out for your Summer reading.
